Friday Clive

For my dear friend Carol. Surely Clive was thinking of you when he wrote this?

"Isn't it funny the way some combinations of words can give you - almost apart from their meaning - a thrill like music?"

Yes! Yesyesyesyesyesyes!!

I had that thrill just a few minutes ago, reading Zinsser on Friday.

In an article I have no wish to link to, he wrote this:

Another book is The Age of Movies: Selected Writings of Pauline Kael, an anthology by the Library of America, which admirably collects in matching editions the works of America’s literary giants. I’ll admit that I was surprised to see two decades of film journalism canonized in the same church as Lincoln, Thoreau, Emerson, Walt Whitman, and Emily Dickinson; that’s a fairly loose canon.

That loose canon pun positively thrilled me.

And I always look forward to your Friday Clive, my friend.
